The Bilirubin (Indirect) test estimates the level of unconjugated (water-insoluble) bilirubin present in the blood. Indirect bilirubin is produced from the breakdown of red blood cells and is transported to the liver bound to albumin, where it is converted into direct (conjugated) bilirubin.
Elevated indirect bilirubin levels commonly suggest increased red blood cell destruction (hemolysis) or impaired liver uptake/conjugation, as seen in conditions such as hemolytic anemia, Gilbert’s syndrome, or early neonatal jaundice.
This test is usually interpreted along with Total and Direct Bilirubin levels and other liver function parameters to determine the cause of jaundice or anemia.
