Chloride is an essential electrolyte that works closely with sodium and potassium to maintain proper fluid balance, osmotic pressure, and acid–base equilibrium in the body. The Chloride blood test is commonly ordered as part of an electrolyte panel or basic metabolic panel. Abnormal chloride levels may indicate dehydration, kidney disease, adrenal disorders, metabolic acidosis or alkalosis, heart failure, or excessive vomiting and diarrhea. The test is also useful in monitoring patients receiving IV fluids or those with chronic illnesses affecting electrolyte balance.
