DLC studies the components of white blood cells namely Neutrophils, Lymphocytes, Monocytes, Eosinophils & Basophils. It also flags off presence of any abnormal cell poputation. In body fluids, DLC helps to diagnose infection & inflammation.

The composition of normal pleural fluid consists of total white blood cell count of 1.716 x 10(3) cells mL(-1). Differential cell counts: 75% macrophages, 23% lymphocytes, and marginally present mesothelial cells (1% to 2%), neutrophils (1%), and eosinophils (0%).

A healthy person's DLC count should fall within a certain range: Neutrophils 40-60%, Lymphocytes 20-40%, Monocyte 2-8%, Eosinophil 1-4% and Basophil up to 1%.
