Hemoglobin HPLC (High-Performance Liquid Chromatography) or Electrophoresis is a specialized laboratory test that separates different types of hemoglobin present in red blood cells based on their charge or retention time.
This test accurately quantifies normal hemoglobin fractions (HbA, HbA2, HbF) and detects abnormal variants such as HbS, HbC, HbE, and HbD. It is considered the gold standard for diagnosing thalassemia syndromes, sickle cell disease, and other hemoglobinopathies.
HPLC offers precise numerical values, making it especially useful for screening carriers, antenatal testing, family studies, and newborn screening. Electrophoresis may be used as an alternative where HPLC is unavailable.
