The Hepatitis B Core Antigen – IgM Antibodies (HBc-IgM) test measures IgM class antibodies produced during the early phase of Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection.

These antibodies appear shortly after infection and are most prominent during the acute stage and the window period, when HBsAg may be negative and Anti-HBs has not yet appeared. A positive HBc-IgM result strongly indicates recent or ongoing acute Hepatitis B infection and helps differentiate acute infection from chronic HBV infection.
