The Hepatitis B Surface Antigen (HBsAg) test detects the presence of surface antigen of the Hepatitis B virus (HBV) in the blood. HBsAg is the earliest and most important marker of Hepatitis B infection and appears before symptoms develop.

A positive HBsAg result indicates current HBV infection, which may be acute or chronic, and also signifies that the person can transmit the virus. Persistence of HBsAg for more than 6 months suggests chronic Hepatitis B or carrier state. This test is widely used for screening, diagnosis, blood donor testing, antenatal screening, and monitoring HBV infection.
