Ionized Calcium

Ionized Calcium is a biochemical blood test that measures the free, physiologically active form of calcium circulating in the blood. Unlike total calcium, ionized calcium is not affected by protein levels, making it a more accurate indicator of true calcium status. This test is particularly useful in critically ill patients, individuals with kidney disease, parathyroid disorders, acid–base imbalances, or abnormal total calcium levels. Abnormal ionized calcium levels may lead to symptoms such as muscle cramps, tingling, bone pain, cardiac rhythm disturbances, or seizures. Accurate measurement helps guide diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of calcium-related disorders.
