Iron

Iron is an essential mineral required for hemoglobin production and oxygen transport in the blood. The Iron blood test measures the amount of circulating iron bound to transferrin in the serum. Abnormal iron levels may indicate conditions such as iron deficiency anemia, chronic blood loss, malnutrition, hemochromatosis, or liver disorders. Low iron levels can cause fatigue, weakness, pale skin, and shortness of breath, while high levels may lead to organ damage if untreated. This test is commonly interpreted along with ferritin, TIBC, and transferrin saturation to provide a complete assessment of iron metabolism and guide appropriate treatment.
